The History
This is a truly important piece of Waterford history. First settled in the 6th century by a monastic community, the island was later owned by Maurice Fitzgerald, cousin of Strongbow, when the Normans landed at Waterford in 1160. The Fitzgerald family continued to own the island for 800 years!
The current castle as it stands is a much more modern construction that it would first appear. Although the original keep was built in the 15th century, it was largely derelict for hundreds of years until it was enlarged and added to in the 1850s until the turn of the twentieth century.
The island remained with the Fitzgerald family until 1958 when a farming family bought the property for growing fruits and vegetables. It later passed to a dairy farmer before being bought and developed into a luxury hotel in 1988.
“The Next Chapter”
Colliers go on to outline the future potential of the already fantastic estate. Planning permission has been granted to extend the castle hotel to provide more guest accommodation and larger function rooms. There is talk of a spa or equestrian centre and possibly a marina.
The Island Haven could be transformed into a world class resort to rival the finest in Europe.
